Practical bevel, fit-up and tacking practice

According to ASME B31.3 and ISO 9692-1, weld preparation geometry directly controls root quality and fusion. A common fit-up error is an oversized root gap exceeding 3 mm for manual GTAW root passes, which leads to burn-through and excessive shrinkage. Conversely, a gap below 1.5 mm restricts access for complete fusion, increasing lack-of-penetration defects.

Practical bevel angles typically range from 30° to 37.5° per side for butt welds in carbon steel piping. The root face (land) should be held between 1.5 and 2.0 mm to balance support and penetration. Alignment tolerances per ASME B31.3 Table 328.4.2 limit internal misalignment to 1.5 mm for wall thickness up to 12 mm.

Tacking practice is often underestimated. Tack welds must have adequate throat thickness (at least 1/3 of the final weld) and be placed at the root face, not on the bevel face. Excessive tack length or heat input can create hard spots that crack during subsequent welding. The recommended tack length is 10 to 25 mm, spaced 200 to 300 mm apart, depending on pipe diameter.

A key quality check before root welding is the hi-lo gauge measurement on internal alignment. If hi-lo exceeds 1.5 mm, root fusion becomes unreliable.
