This standard provides a framework for using prequalified welding procedures, reducing the need for extensive WPQR testing in common joint configurations.
The key benefit is time and cost savings. Instead of qualifying a new WPS for every thickness or joint type, fabricators can adopt an SWPS from sources like AWS B2.1 or ISO 15609-based standards. The standard specifies the requirements for adoption, including the range of variables such as material group, thickness, and welding process.
However, the adoption is not automatic. The fabricator must ensure that the SWPS covers the intended production welds and that any essential variables remain within the specified limits. Additionally, the adopted SWPS must be documented and controlled as part of the quality system.
For welding coordinators, EN ISO 15612 offers a practical route to streamline WPS management, especially for repetitive joints in carbon steel or stainless steel. It is a valuable tool for projects with tight schedules and standardized weld details.
