In marine environments, welded joints are particularly vulnerable due to residual stresses, microstructural changes in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), and the presence of weld discontinuities. Localized corrosion mechanisms such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking often initiate at the weld toe or root.

Cathodic protection systems, when properly designed and maintained, can significantly reduce corrosion rates. However, shielding and coating breakdown near welds remain common failure points. Regular inspection using advanced NDT techniques like automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) is essential to detect early-stage corrosion before it compromises integrity.

A robust corrosion management plan should include material selection, weld procedure qualification, and periodic coating inspections. The latest IMCA guidelines emphasize the need for a risk-based approach to prioritize high-criticality joints.
