Green steel project lessons

Working on one of Europe's largest green steel projects taught me three things about scaling low-carbon metallurgy.

First, hydrogen direct reduction changes the game for ironmaking, but the transition from blast furnace to DRI-EAF requires rethinking the entire supply chain. The metallurgy of the iron ore pellets, the hydrogen purity, and the thermal profile of the EAF all interact in ways that are still being optimized.

Second, the steel produced via this route has a different inclusion morphology and nitrogen content compared to conventional BOF steel. Weldability studies show that the HAZ toughness can be affected if the steelmaking parameters are not tightly controlled. This means welding procedures need to be revalidated for each new grade.

Third, the scale of these projects demands a quality culture that goes beyond inspection. Every weld, every NDT report, every material certificate must feed into a digital thread that tracks carbon footprint and mechanical properties simultaneously.
