Titanium welding demands rigorous atmospheric protection to prevent...

A trailing shield is essential for maintaining inert gas coverage over the solidifying weld and heat-affected zone until the temperature drops below 300?C. Typical trailing shield designs for Grade 2 and Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) include a stainless steel housing with a copper or ceramic gas diffuser, delivering argon flow at 15-25 L/min. The shield length must extend 100-150 mm behind the torch to account for the slow cooling rate of titanium.

Key design parameters include:

? Gas flow rate: 20-30 L/min for trailing shield, 10-15 L/min for torch backup

? Shield material: copper or aluminum for heat dissipation, with a flexible skirt for contouring

? Purge time: minimum 30 seconds pre-purge and 60 seconds post-purge

In production, color inspection per AWS G2.4 is used to verify shielding effectiveness. A silver-white weld indicates proper protection; blue or gray signals contamination and requires removal. Proper trailing shield design reduces rework rates significantly, directly impacting fabrication cost and schedule.
