PAUT (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing) for Weld Inspection

According to a 2025 technical bulletin from the American Welding Society (AWS), Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) has become the preferred method for volumetric weld inspection in heavy fabrication and piping projects.

PAUT uses an array of piezoelectric elements that can be electronically steered and focused, enabling a single probe to scan a weld from multiple angles. This reduces inspection time compared to conventional UT and improves detection of planar flaws like lack-of-fusion and cracks.

Key advantages over traditional methods:

• Real-time imaging: sectorial scans produce cross-sectional views of the weld, making interpretation more intuitive.

• Better sizing accuracy: focused beams provide precise length and height measurements of indications.

• Reduced need for radiography: PAUT can replace RT in many applications, eliminating radiation safety concerns.

The 2024 edition of AWS D1.1 now includes comprehensive PAUT acceptance criteria, aligning with ASME Section V. For welding coordinators, this means updating inspection procedures and ensuring technicians are certified to SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 for PAUT.
